Maker's statement

Drawn to finding character and a human like semblance in inanimate objects, Francisca Onumah’s practice explores this concept through the many layers of her making process. She does this by employing imperfections and creating obscure forms within her chosen material to reflect the vulnerabilities of the body.

A dominant figure in a family of ambiguous objects, the ‘Pinch’ vessel is characterised by its tenebrous anthropomorphic form. The emotive and expressive nature of this piece is emphasised by exaggerated figurative features and a sombre blackened finish.

The surface of the vessel is covered with an amalgamation of marks created by repetitious hammered marks and imprinted textile impressions. Each mark is repeated with layered imprints to create a rich tactile surface quality which compliments the alluring sensuous form.
