Date

c.1980

Description

Fragment of an envelope sent to Sam Smith from The Chair House, Ghirarbelli Square, San Francisco. Partially covering the address label is another label, made by Sam Smith, featuring an image of a man with a moustache and folded arms. The label carries the words 'advertisement' and 'Westermann Cometh'. The latter is thought to refer to Horace Clifford Westermann, an American artist admired by Sam Smith and whose work was shown at the Serpentine alongside his own from November 1980 to January 1981. Smith had lobbyed for Westermann's work to be shown in the United Kingdom.
