Maker's statement

This project was an exciting new direction for me -- touching on my long-time fascination in the senses. I also expanded my skill set and scale of work in this material.
After researching the historical use of pomanders I was inspired to work my experiences as a synaesthete into a multisensory piece. Synaesthesia is a neurological condition in which two or more sensory experiences are combined -- For me, scent and colour are strongly intertwined. This piece was designed with the hope of stating conversations about, not only synaesthesia, but also our sensory experiences more broadly. It is a privilege to be able to open this conversation up with the public via such an inspiring institution as the Crafts Council.
