Description

Fired grate comprising a forged steel frame with eight bent steel bards forming the sides and base, welded to round bars on either side.

Materials and techniques

Forged from mild steel bar by driving an oval bar into the hot metal, reheating and bending to the required angle. Components are then slid onto the round bars and strengthened by small welds underneath. Scale and rust are removed with a hot phosphoric acid dip. Grate wire-brushed and black-leaded (ZEBRITE). Reiter K 23 Airpower hammer. Smiths forge using breeze (small coke). Arc welder.
