Maker's statement

1993: The design for this scarf was based on the form and colour of a murex shell. In order to suggest the effect of the rippling edges found on these shells, I devised a special technique to produce silk 'fins' projecting from the surface of the cloth. These fins lay flat on the surface of the cloth during weaving, but during finishing they were thrown into a rippling edge through the contraction of high twist wool in the ground cloth. The use of high twist yarns to create texture has since become a major concern of my work.
