Description

Linen and silk scarf with blocks and stripes in red, purple, pink and yellow.

Materials and techniques

Woven using spun shantung silk in the warp and linen in the weft, all yarn dyed before. The weaving creates multiple, asymetric checked patterns. It is woven on a power loom using a double cloth structure, the prototype having being designed and hand woven on my small computerised Dobby. After being woven, it is washed by hand using a softening agent to relax the linen, and then steam pressed.

Maker's statement

This piece of fabric epitomises my use of block check and stripes, juxtaposing vibrant colours and unusual scale of pattern, which is a strong theme throughout my work.
