Craft School: A summer of playful making

This exhibition was a result of the first year of Craft School— a national programme for schools that challenges learners aged 5-16 to get making. Our Learning team work with a different collaborator each cycle to set the three themes. In years one and two, Craft School: Yinka's Challenge was set by multidisciplinary artist Yinka Ilori, running from September 2022 to March 2023. Children from across the country took part in a schools’ challenge to craft new work in response to the themes of play, storytelling, and empowerment. Underpinned by Make First, the Craft’s Council’s craft pedagogy, the challenge placed materials into the hands of young people to encourage ‘thinking through making’. The winning works by learners and teachers were displayed in the Crafts Council gallery, alongside objects from the Crafts Council’s Collection, seen here. Learn more about Craft School here.
