Maker's statement

This work marked a significant moment in my practice. It heralded working in a new medium for me as well as working on a smaller scale.

Kew Gardens is a place of quiet contemplation and inspiration to me. I am fortunate to live close to the Gardens and have loved walking the grounds regularly for over a decade now. I particularly enjoy sitting on the stone bench facing Japanese Zen Garden. I also love the Palm House at Kew, the fragrance of the wet earth and tropical trees there reminds me of my home in India.

My painting seeks to express the sense of tranquillity I feel being surrounded by nature at the Gardens. The blue tones I have used in the painting allude to the Gardens being an oasis of calm to me, a place to escape to from the busyness of urban life. Rhythms of lines and marks evoke the harmony of stones in the Japanese Garden of Peace at Kew and are also a reference to walking paths, sowing and sewing.
