Maker's statement
Matching Pairs is in the vein of Fluxus and artists’ multiples and pays homage to the children’s card game Snap!
The cards, which draw inspiration from popular culture and architecture, were designed by the artist, cut on a vinyl cutter, and carefully assembled by hand in self-adhesive vinyl.
Bharti Parmar is interested in vernacular crafts such as marquetry and commonly subverts non-standard materials to make highly crafted artworks.
Matching Pairs was first exhibited at The Twin, Coventry Biennial of Contemporary Art 2019 which reflected upon the Coventry’s relationship with twinned cities and the wider concept of doubles, pairing and relationships.
Parmar also made every component of the brass box including rivets, and the modified card table-style cabinet at STEAMhouse Birmingham.
