Maker's statement
Working as I do almost entirely by commission, I lack enthusiasm for works of lettering which do not go beyond the merely representational. I find it difficult, for instance to enjoy works using letters that do not transcend the purely informational, blandly literal or simply visual. This piece is an attempt to comment upon the dilemma of the maker in trying to retain the spirit of the work alongside careful and exacting craft methods. I believe that this piece not only speaks of this dilemma, but is manifestly demonstrating the dilemma itself. Exhibited in Visions and Revisions, Collection touring exhibition, closed 1998.
