Description

Shell-shaped glasswork mounted with bronze supports.

Materials and techniques

Kiln-cast glass and bronze. Lost wax casting technique, from an original model in mixed media. The wax model had wax inclusions worked into the surface, which are embedded in the investment mould and cast into the glass during firing. The copper and silver react with the glass and heat to create the colours - red, blue-green. The glass cast is cut and polished and mounted with bronze castings, also lost-wax from wooden carvings. The bronze is finished and patinated.

Maker's statement

This is the most recent piece. I only make about 4 a year. Formally it is a synthesis of animal and mechanical forms into I hope ambiguous and decorative unity. It can be read as either right to left or vice versa, ie. no front of rear. Although sculptural, it belongs firmly in the CRAFTS.
