Handling Sample 1 is an unresolved work. The original idea was to develop a series of seven, wall based works, each woven from a vintage full petticoat. One to imply seven days a week of mundane routine of getting dressed and putting on makeup every day. Shrink and Shrunk of 1998 were part of this series, but ended up being a pair.
Female identity, underwear being seen as a second skin [are my sources of inspirations for this piece]. The way women’s bodies are represented in the media and in the fashion industry. The way women change their bodies, either permanently or temporarily in pursue of the ideal body.
I was not happy with Handling Sample 1, as it was not working and was not able to resolve the piece once cut off the loom. Normally I would re-work the raw materials until the piece was successful, but the piece would not of survived being undone and then re-worked as the materials of the petticoat would of frayed and disintegrated.
