Materials and techniques
Cotton thread, woven on a 16 harness computer driven loom. The fabric for 'Fragment' explores the moire effect created by vertical warp stripes being crossed by diagonal weft twill stripes. Since the two sets of stripes repeat at intervals different from each other, their crossing points step up or down to form a larger pattern. Combined with the ikat discharged and dyed warp and weft images, the effect is that the pattern seems to be hovering over the surface of the cloth. This work is part of an ongoing series that refers to 'chi', or vital life force.
