Maker's statement

'Layers' - This clock consists of a series of layers representing different aspects of opencast mining. The first is the earth overlaid with a layer of crushed coal, then grass, represented by Verdigris copper. Above these is the pit wheel dominated by the pick-axe hands.

Scale model for the proposed clock for a coal mining factory. The clock would be situated in the foyer of the company's headquarters. The design includes crushed coal as one of the materials from which it would be built.
