Description

Narrow softwood form culminating in points at either end, coiled in steel wire and 'braised' to create colour and texture.

Materials and techniques

Carved and shaped softwood form made using draw knife, spokeshave, compass plane and Surform bandsaw. 3mm diameter black annealed soft iron wire coiled around wood form then 'braised' using oxy-acetylene welding equipment. Scorched wooden form remains inside. Carbons from wood create black areas on the surface metal. The yellow areas are brass (mixture of copper and zinc). The pink areas are copper, created by 'burning' the brass - heating to extreme temperature to burn off the zinc. The piece is scrubbed using detergent and a bristle brush to remove excess flux then is sealed using a matt, clear acrcylic lacquer when dry.

Maker's statement

Piece marked move away from concentric forms (section). 1st use of braising rather than welding. 1st use of smaller gauge wire - 3mm diameter as compared to bulkier 6mm bar previously used opening up opportunities for 'finer' work, lighter. 1st piece with wood core left inside.
