Description
Ceramic figure of a seated Virgin with Child on her lap, with inlaid images and slip painted, predominantly green, yellow, and brown.
Materials and techniques
Built from soft slabs in y-material. Bisque fired to 1140C. Glaze fired to 1060C with subsequent firings at 1000C and 800C. Inlaid images, slip painted. Glaze painted (lead based tin and vellum glazes all to 1060). Open stock enamel transfers and cut out coloured sheet transfers applied and fired to 1000C and 800C. 4 to 5 firings in total.

It can be seen as part of a series of large polychrome "Virgins" begun in 1998 which draw influence from European Gothic religious woodcarvings of the 13th and 14th centuries.
