Maker's statement

Own time represents a significant new beginning in my recent work; it is the first of a series of pieces which investigate a correlation between the process of weaving and the moving image. This has come about through considering the relevance of woven imagery as a contemporary visual medium and how our perception of this uncommon mark making might be informed and mediated by familiar "filmic" images and experiences. Own time also seeks to address the relationship between the parts of the piece and our own body, as "work which tells us how to exist as bodies of emotion, bodies of feelings but also how this isn't anymore within the boundaries of our skin..."1 1 Sarat Maharaj, catalogue for Art Textiles 2 Bury St Edmunds Gallery, 2000, p.12
