Description

Bust image of a man with a burgundy coloured shawl around his neck, stitched on a cream coloured fabric and many of the threads are long and lie loosely on the surface. The shawl is made of laser cut flowers. The work is stretched on a wooden frame, with no front frame.

Materials and techniques

This portrait uses a mixture of hand and machine embroidery, screen print and laser cut fabric. The face is hand stitched, while the jacket is stitched using a sewing machine. The laser cut detail on the scarf involves programming the shapes I want to use onto a software programme (2D design) linked up to a laser cutter, which cuts fabric and other materials with a very fine laser. The background material is wool with cotton and polyester thread sewn into it. The laser cut fabric is satin acetate.

Maker's statement

This piece incorporates a new element of laser cutting - which allows me to cut fabric into precise, detailed shapes, an alternative to the hand cut fabric applique I often use in my work. It is an element that i want to experiment more with in future, as well as other CAD/CAM based technologies such as vinyl cutting and digital embroidery.
