Maker's statement

I work almost exclusively with hand rolled felt, exploring both its 'painterly' and 'sculptural' qualities. The images I use are derived from domestic objects, referring to the traditions of 'still life'. Felt interests me because of its rich cultural traditions and its tactile and sculptural properties. Felt is a material which carries much meaning. It was believed to have magical properties - a white felt mattress for example, would protect the sleeper from dangerous scorpions or snakes.
