Description

17/7 stainless steel wire forming two cubes where the inner cube holds a partridge egg.

Materials and techniques

Made at the request of the Scottish Gallery for inclusion in COLLECT 2011, this piece is constructed entirely of precipitation-hardening stainless steel wire which was joined using a Rofin-Baasel Laser welding machine. The (blown) partridge egg was found by the maker in his spinach bed outside his studio and was added as a playful after-thought.

Maker's statement

The piece would not have occurred in my normal practice and progression but the Scottish Gallery wished to present a collection of boxes, each by one of their gallery artists. Because COLLECT is an important platform so I agreed to make a ‘box’. Hyper-cube is the outcome.

Its rectilinear nature may be regarded as alien to my normal work. Though it could have been made precisely using jigs and formers it was, as usual with my work, made entirely free-hand. The partridge egg was an afterthought, a beautiful natural contrast to the constructed form.
