Content
Wood carver and sculptor Paul Caton began creating hand-carved pieces when he was 20, and continues to do so today from his country-side home in North Hereford. In this 2015 First Decade interview, Caton talks about his affinity with trees and nature, teaching himself to carve, and being accepted into the Crafts Council Index in 1976. Caton’s woodcarving began when he joined the Swiss Forest Commission, and started making in his spare time. In this interview, he describes the making process in detail and his enjoyment in being a 'full-time bowl maker', and creating pieces that have a tactile, visual and sculptural quality. He talks about being in the presence of makers such as Hans Coper and Lucie Rie, who were a generation ahead of him, but influenced him greatly.
