Maker's statement

This book was a continuation of an exploration of a specific theme i.e. The secret garden, or enclosed inner space, which from time immemorial has been taken to have a double meaning and to present an inner world while perfectly representing an outer one. This fact was well understood in the 14th century when the book was originally produced in France, and all Guillaume de Lorris' readers, and Chaucer's too, would have been familiar with the convention, and perfectly well able to interpret the story on two different levels, or if you like on three; a representational, a psychological and a mystical one. If this seems to make the story complicated it is not so. It is the clarity and immediacy of its telling which makes it so applicable.

Ann Brunskill, 14 October 1974
