Noel Dyrenforth discusses Crafts Revival, ‘counter-culture’ and finding his place as an ‘outsider’ in the art of Batik. Prior to Dyrenforth’s work, Batik had little tradition in western culture. Dyrenforth highlights that his rise to prominence in Batik was partly a result of attempting to blur the disciplines of art and craft at a time when there was a post-war subculture of drugs, music, political activism and feminism. His pioneering work also emerged from taking risks and experimenting with 2000 year old techniques drawn out of China, Indonesia, Japan and Australia. Dyrenforth comments on his affinity to tribal and nomadic peoples whose ‘fine embroidery’ inspired him, and how he took influence from the ‘imposing’ landscape of Australia during the 6 months he spent working there.
